THE GOOD DICTATOR was his debut novel, promising to be the first in a series Gonçalo is calling ‘The Birth of an Empire. The translation form the Portuguese is by Ethan Mortimore. In a unique bow to his readers Gonçalo opens with the nidus for his book – ‘Story taken from the Lisbon Chronicle newspaper: “Late yesterday afternoon, in Alto do Colaride, a burnt-out car containing a charred body was found.
